13th Century French Cloisters and Versailles Gardens

Bought and transported from France to the Bahamas, William Randolph Hearst's vision for the Cloisters to be erected on the island wasn't realized until the early 1960s when Huntington Hartford commisioned its assembly. The gardens across the street form a nice continuity with the Cloisters but actually form a French garden maintained by the One and Only Beach, portions of which are open for public viewing. Two massive copper statues of Livingstone and FDR stare at each other from about midway into the garden.

The above sun dial in the garden is actually set up to at least approximate the time, the shadow is cast at 4PM, the approximate time I was there.

Most of these pictures were taken on February 21st, 2013 but a handful were taken the previous Sunday on February 17th, 2013

Fort Montagu, Nassau, New Providence, Bahamas

The below pictures are of Fort Montagu as seen on Thursday, February 21st, 2013, a couple of pictures were taken a few days earlier but unfortunately we arrived too late to enter the fort.

The fort is notable as being a focal point of the Battle of Nassau. The fort itself held its ground and forced the raiding American revolutionaries, seeking gunpowder, to land to the south and east of that particular fort. That landing would be the first landing of the US Marine Corps.

The below pictures are of Fort Montagu as seen on Thursday, February 21st, 2013, a couple of pictures were taken a few days earlier but unfortunately we arrived too late to enter the fort.

Potter's Cay Fish Market, Nassau, Bahamas

These pictures were taken on Thursday, February 21st, 2013 between 11-12 o'clock in the morning. I was taking the pictures as I was walking across the smaller of the two Paradise Island bridges. If you like fresh seafood, this place is definitely for you. It doesn't get any fresher than the boat pulling up to the back of the restaurant! Of course, in the Bahamas, that kind've means that you need to like Conch because they seem to catch alot of these mollusks living on the ocean floor. Tried it, personally I don't care for it, but there are other fish dishes served of course.

In the above picture, we see what Potter's Cay is all about, no frills, no fuss, just a simple fishing boat pulled up to the dock behind a row of restaurants, note the empty conch shells.

And in the above picture we see the front side of the business, Donnie's Conch salad.

In the above picture we can see that this is definitely not the Ritz Carlton, or in the Bahamas, Atlantis, but you will not find a place that serves fresher fish!

In the bottom two pictures we see the general overview of the area as seen from the smaller of the Paradise Island bridges, the relation between Potter's Cay and the main island, New Providence.

In the below picture we see the Bahamian national pasttime, dominoes. Everywhere you go, its not uncommon to see men playing this game. They play it quite forcefully too I might add, actually slamming the 'bones' onto the table!

There are so many Bahamian elements to these pictures, that I would consider this picture to capture a signifigant essence of the Bahamas, it is quitessentially Bahamian.

Day after Winter Storm Nemo in Riverdale, NJ, February 9th, 2013

Winter Storm Nemo was a powerful Nor'easter storm that travelled up the Atlantic Coast mostly focused on New England, New Jersey saw a fair amount of snow. After the storm departed the following day what unfolded was one of the most beautiful days I have ever seen in my life, blue skies on a mild winter day revealed moisture laden snow mostly sticking to the leafless trees.
