At the juncture of Wanaque Avenue and Hamburg Turnpike lies a junction that many who live in and around the area around Pompton Lakes, NJ will readily recognize. A road junction that is difficult to navigate? Well, yes, it is difficult to navigate, but how many of you have stopped to check out the monuments that are there? Well, I’m turning 40 this Friday and I never had. Turns out that spot was a former headquarters for George Washington, and that he stood there on at least two occasions. That’s interesting enough, but inasmuch as it represents hallowed ground for the people of Pompton Lakes, NJ, they decided to build a war memorial there, fitting, right? Well, on that spot has been placed a relic of the pre-dreadnought battleship USS Maine. Yes, a piece of the USS Maine, sunk in Havana harbor triggering the Spanish-American War. Turns out the Spanish probably didn’t sabotage the ship, but sorry, no, you can’t have Puerto Rico back!
Below we see the junction from afar:
Here is the USS Maine relic on its pedestal:
The Pompton Lakes Liberty Bell, inscribed that it was forged in Baltimore, MD, which, unlike the English-forged Liberty Bell means this one didn't crack!
Where Washington met Van Cortland in Pompton Lakes, NJ
To the left of the USS Maine relic is, what appears to be at least, a Civil War cannon, perhaps a Model 1861 3-inch wrought iron rifle?
